100 years ago, in the piney woods of Mississippi, a dream was planted... and Hope sprang forth. In the spring of 1909, a young man stepped off the train in Braxton carrying only a few clean shirts, a Bible, a couple of textbooks, his diploma, and a dollar-sixty-five. He had come to the South to educate the sharecropping sons and daughters of impoverished former slaves, but he quickly learned that the piney woods region was no place for an outsider, especially one looking to start a negro school. A century later, the inspiring story and enduring legacy of Dr. Laurence C. Jones is celebrated on film using an artistic blend of archival and reenacted imagery.
