Italian Polluted Site Sulcis-Iglesias-Guspini (Cagliari), 2015 The Italian record for most contaminated area is one among the most beautiful Mediterranean islands, Sardinia. The island, which closed the year 2014 with a 10% more tourist presence, has about 445,000 hectares of contaminated land. Since the sixties, the third largest region in the peninsula has witnessed the development of an industrialisation model with a strong impact on the environment and the lives of local communities, inferred with the consent and the enthusiasm of the local political class. Here, like elsewhere in Italy, this production system faced its decline with the end of national investments, causing a deep industrial crisis to hit the entire country.
