In Ireland’s bygone days, the defining moment of a wedding celebration was the arrival of ‘The Strawboys.’ Musicians, singers, dancers and poets arrived at an unexpected hour in masks and costumes hand-made of straw. The faces of neighbours and friends were behind these disguises, but their identities were never revealed, for it was their mysterious presence that brought good luck and fortune to the newly-married couple. This ancient custom is becoming a thing of the past, but The O’Sullivans in County Kerry have kept this tradition alive – a tradition that honours their ancestors and brings them closer as a family. And even as they hand down this simple custom from one generation to another, they wonder if their personal commitment is enough to make it last in modern times.
